Challenges:
- There are unique challenges when living at the top of a hill out in the country.
- The wind seems to blow at least 15-20 miles an hour faster than it does in the city where buildings can help deflect it. Heavyweight furniture is required to keep it from blowing away. Weights placed in flower containers have to be used to keep them from blowing over. Rocks must be used instead of wood mulch. The wind blows in weed seed heads from miles around. Plants dry out quickly and ways to keep the plants in containers damp without daily watering has been a learning process.
- The soil here is heavy clay and filled with rocks.
- We share our land with deer, turkeys, quail, rabbits, snakes, and pack rats.
Gardening Tips:
- Take the time to study your garden.
- Be open to the idea that with the passing years, sun and shade conditions will change, and you will need to be willing to change with them.
How would you like someone to describe your garden?
- It is a place where they can relax and at the same time, learn about plants and animal life.
